Mr. Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi
Chairman of the Board of Directors
The year 2020 was a year of challenges with the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). This pandemic had not only caused major disruptions to people's everyday life, but it had also inflicted severe damages to our economy. As a result of this situation, consumers’ purchasing power had weakened and Berli Jucker Public Company Limited or BJC saw its total income decrease to 157,708 million Thai Baht in 2020, down by 9.4% from 2019. Meanwhile, shareholders’ net profit also dropped by 45% from that of 2019 to 4,001 million Thai Baht in 2020. Nevertheless, with the strength of its vast business network from upstream to downstream, including its product distribution center and its logistics chain covering every region of Thailand, BJC was able to adapt quickly to the situation continuing to operate the existing business and seeking for new business opportunities. Moreover, the company was able to focus on building trust and taking care of all stakeholders, including our staff, customers, business partners, and society as a whole, so that together we worked to overcome the crisis.
In the previous year, BJC Group had made adjustments to its business and investment plans in enhancing production process, streamlining workflow, improving management cost, and adopting new digital systems to boost work performance for the Group in keeping up with the rapidly changing situation. In addition, the Group had also focused on consistently growing its business. Big C Supercenter, a hypermarket in BJC’s modern retail segment, had expanded in various formats with over 200 stores establishing a strong link between its offline and online retail businesses to respond to new consumers’ lifestyle arising from the pandemic. Regarding other business segments, the company manufactured and procured products related to health promotion, medical treatment, and disease prevention while also developed and expanded its online sales channels.
Throughout the past 138 years, BJC Group has continuously adhered to the principles of good business governance and conducted its business with honesty and transparency, and at the same time the Group is committed to the environmental and social responsibility. The Group is also proud to have taken part in supporting the community via its BJC Big C Foundation and other social development programs launched by various organizations. During the COVID-19 outbreak, BJC Group and Big C have partnered with the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University to launch the “Shop Dai Boon” campaign raising fund for research and development of COVID-19 vaccine, and there were also distributions of medical masks and alcohol gel to staff and various other organizations.
I would like to thank all shareholders, customers, business partners, and various organizations for your valuable support and trust in BJC Group. I would also like to thank the Executive Board and every staff member for their full co-operation and dedication enabling us to overcome all challenges, to carry out business in line with the Group’s visions and policies, and to ultimately achieve our goals together.
