BERLI JUCKER SUCCEEDS WITH THAI GLASS TENDER
Berli Jucker Public Co. Ltd. announced today that, following the close of its tender
offer for the 33.9 per cent of Thai Glass Industries that it did not already own, its
shareholding in Thai Glass had increased to 97.74 per cent.
The Baht 1.29 billion purchase is to be funded from proceeds of Berli Jucker's recently
completed Baht 4 billion rights issue which is also being used to reduce debt and fund
further acquisitions.
At the time of making the tender Berli Jucker stated it would seek to privatize Thai
Glass if the tender resulted in a shareholding of greater than 80 per cent. The
Company will now proceed with its privatization plan with an offer of Baht 70 per
share which is consistent with the tender just completed.
Berli Jucker's Chief Executive Officer David Nicol said: "Privatizing Thai Glass is a
major step in Berli Jucker's investment and rationalization programme. We already act
as the unit's sales agent and distributor, and this will allow us to better coordinate our
operations in future."
Thai Glass is currently Thailand's largest producer of glass containers with a market
share of approximately 40 per cent. In 1997 the Company recorded a net profit Baht
324.2 million on turnover of Baht 3,681 million.
