NCREASES GLASS-CONTAINER MENUFACTURING CAPABILTY

Press Release BERLI JUCKER TO INCREASE GLASS-CONTAINER MANUFACTURING CAPABILITY BY 36,000 TONNES A YEAR Berli Jucker Public Co. Ltd. announced today that it will spend THB 400 million over the next eight months to increase its glass-container manufacturing capability by 36,000 tonnes per year and to rebuild certain furnaces. The expansion, which will be undertaken by the Company's Thai Glass Industries subsidiary will enable Berli Jucker to expand production to meet growing demand within Thailand's recovering economy. The expansion and re-building of glass furnaces will be funded from internal resources. In order to support committed expansion plans on the part of major customers, the Group is also evaluating a third production location, in addition to its existing facilities at Bangplee and Rajburana, which would have initial annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes. A final decision regarding this site, which will require capital investment of Baht 2 billion, should be made by the end of 1999. Berli Jucker's President and CEO, David J. Nicol, commented: "As Thailand's leading independent supplier of glass containers, we need to have capacity and service that our customers can rely on. At present we are capacity constrained in a number of areas. During the recent economic downturn, some customers and competitors have not fared well while others have achieved considerable success. This latter group have provided good volumes for our business and we must in turn ensure that all customers can continue with developing their business free of concerns about container availability. Press Release - page 2 The structure of the glass container industry in Thailand is not perfect and I am aware of some surplus capacity in other companies. The issue of expansion for us at this time therefore does carry some risks but I am confident in our customers and in our service and value proposition. Khun Phornchai Athikhomkulchai, responsible for marketing and customer relationships for the Group's glass business added, "the immediately committed expansion is in connection with customer specific projects".
